Pupils make experiments with Science-Lab

The Cool guys, The Know-It-All or The experimental stars – these were the names of the 63 junior researchers at the Boland school in Herzebrock-Clarholz. The education centre Science Lab helped them to transfer the classrooms into research labs to find out more about natural phenomenons. The CLAAS Foundation supports this project.

The bus-experiment: Dr. Vera Romberg-Forkert discovers together with the children which forces act upon the passengers in a full bus.

„This is about getting boys and girls enthusiastic about natural science and technology“, states Dr. Vera Romberg-Forkert from Science Lab. Three days the trained engineer was part of the school lessons. The pupils of the Boland School learnt about the method of research which is to ask questions before starting the experiments. Focus of all questions was the bicycle: How does a brake work? What does a ball bearing look like? What do you need a gear shift for? The pupils formed teams which then carried out various experiments in order to answer these questions. There were clear functions in a team: There was the secretary, time and material guard, facilitator and speaker- just like in a real research team.

„How quickly turns the back wheel using the different gears?“, was one of the questions that the young tinkerers worked on.

Not only the pupils profited from the project days with Science-Lab. The lady teachers Janine Altekrüger and Andrea Haske took part in a special training. This training showed how technical education can be conveyed to the children using modern methods and experimental equipment. Apart from that, the Boland School also received research boxes with materials for experiments. This material is the basis for the future experiments in the various class rooms.

This project funded by the CLAAS Foundation takes place at six primary schools in the borough of Gütersloh.

Only allowed for experimental purpose: Cycling in a class room.
