Up to this point the recognition of single feeding pigs is not legally required, still that might change in the near future. In pig breeding, there are already various systems in operation to allocate feed to the animals individually and to arrange a varied daily routine bearing the animal’s welfare and health in mind. This sort of management is not applied to groups of feeding pigs, mainly because there is no system available which is tailored to the needs of feeding pigs. However, this will be history soon:
M.Sc.agr. Tobias Stekeler from the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Hohenheim is a sound step ahead and currently working on a prototype of an electronic earmark which makes a single recognition of feeding pigs possible.: "Pigs do prefer being in a group, this is common knowledge" says Tobias Stekeler. So the breeder of feeding pigs can confidently look into the future: Recognition of single feeding pigs is no longer a rocket science.
